Change a Light, Change the World

Through the Change a Light / Change the world events, sponsored by Rutgers University Facilities, and NJ Clean Energy, through Energy Star™ , we brought students, faculty, and staff awareness and involvement in conserving energy and reducing our carbon foot print.

We had three pledge drives -- at Douglass Student Center on Dec. 4, Nov. 12 at the Busch Student Center and Nov. 26 at the Rutgers Student Center on College Avenue.

By pledging to change out five of their most frequently used incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs, students will be taking a small step, but when there are many taking small steps, you have significant change. The offices of Facilities and Housing are in the process of doing a lighting audit of the university.

From the auditing findings, we will be replacing inefficient lighting with high efficiency lighting and controls. These retrofits will take place across the Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses, over five years, at a cost of $18.7 million, and will reduce our energy consumption by 42,500,000 KWh and reduce CO2 emissions by 23,333 tons per year. The estimated energy cost saving is $5,525,000 annually.

Students can get involved in energy conservation. The best way is to be conscious of your energy usage:

  • Turn out the lights when not needed
  • Set your computer to go in sleep mode
  • Walk instead of driving

During the coming days, months, and years we will be looking to the students for their participation in projects as they come to fruition. We want everyone to start thinking, sustainability and energy conservation until it becomes second nature. If we don’t do it now, there may not be a tomorrow. The earth will still be here but humankind may not if we continue down the road of a throwaway society.
